Back in June Sony teased its next 3 months worth of PlayStation Plus titles, including the announcement that Giant Squid’s upcoming hoverboarding puzzler ‘Sword of the Sea’ would be a day-one addition. Arriving later today, the successor to the PS5 launch title ‘The Pathless’ looks to be the team’s best work yet.
With a Metacritic score of 88, Sword of the Sea is officially the highest rated game from developer Giant Squid. Though the team have just 3 titles under their belt so far (including Sword of the Sea), each successive entry has been better than the last.
For context, Giant Squid was founded in 2013 by Matt Nava, who served as art director for both Flower and Journey by ThatGameCompany. Since then, the team have released two projects: ABZU and The Pathless – both of which featured excellent visuals, satisfying gameplay and unique vibes.
Based on early reviews, Sword of the Sea has managed to build upon the fluid mechanics of both prior games, leaving many in a satisfying flow state.
Of course, nothing’s perfect, with the primary ‘complaint’ with the game being its relatively simple trick system and short length.
While Giant Squid has yet to hit the highs of ThatGameCompany’s peak output ‘Journey’ (with a score of 92), it’s clear that this relatively new studio is well on its way to cementing itself within the genre.
