Sony announces new PlayStation ‘Franchise Rewards’ program

Following just a few years in service, Sony’s PlayStation Stars Rewards program was officially shut down earlier this Summer. At the time, the console maker promised to “continue to evaluate our key findings from this program, and are looking into ways to build upon these learnings”. Though not quite the same thing, Sony has now unveiled its new ‘Franchise Rewards’ program.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Katie Lennox – the director for PlayStation’s new ‘Franchise Rewards’ program wrote: “Starting today, we’re introducing a new merchandise program that celebrates your in-game achievements with special collectibles — beginning with Ghost Rewards.”

As is in the name, Ghost Rewards are focused on the upcoming Ghost of Yotei, with players able to “unlock access to a selection of limited-edition merchandise” upon obtaining the ‘Mono No Aware’ Gold or ‘Living Legend’ Platinum trophies before the end of the year.

The Gold trophy in particular will allow you to purchase a ‘commemorative T-Shirt’ while Platinum holders can obtain a fancy commemorative pin.

Seeing as how these are physical items, players will unfortunately need to pay for these memorabilia, with the T-shirt going for $30 and the pin setting you back $25.

While not quite the replacement to PlayStation Stars, it is encouraging to see Sony trying new things. It will be interesting to see how much support this new Franchise Rewards program winds up receiving in the medium-to-long term.
