Silent Hill f is the highest-rated original entry in over 20 years

While the Silent Hill franchise is undeniably a classic in the video games medium, the horror series has had far from the smoothest of rides in its almost 30 years of existence. That said, after lying dormant for a decade, the franchise is back and bigger than ever, with the latest release Silent Hill f’ representing the highest-rated original entry in over two decades.

With a Metacritic score of 85 and an OpenCritic rating of 87, Silent Hill f is currently the highest rated entry in the series since 2003’s Silent Hill 3 (which also managed a Metacritic score of 85).

In fact, the only titles in the franchise to have a higher rating are the original Silent Hill (86); Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 Remake (also 86); and last but certainly not least, the OG Silent Hill 2 (89).

One of the biggest risks taken with Silent Hill f was its switch-up in setting, transporting players to rural Japan. Fortunately, this seems to have paid off, with critics praising the new setting’s “distinct identity” while still carrying “within it the DNA of Silent Hill.”

Beyond the atmosphere, particular merit was given to the game’s narrative, being described as an “overwhelming” and “ambitious” experience which “rivals the best in the series.”

Though some found enjoyment in the gameplay, Silent Hill f’s biggest downside appears to be in this particular department. Fortunately, gameplay and combat are from the franchise’s main priorities, and so it is exciting to see that after decades in limbo, Silent Hill appears to be truly back and better than ever.
