Decade-old PAYDAY 2 introduces DLC rental service

More than decade on from its last entry, PAYDAY 3 launched back in 2023 to plenty of criticisms, with many fans of the franchise choosing to go back to the older but more content-rich PAYDAY 2. It seems the team have taken note of this, as Starbreeze have now added a highly-unnecessary subscription service to the 12 year-old title.

Available to subscribe to right now for £3.99 a month (or £15.99 for 6 months), PAYDAY 2’s new service will net you “full access to all available PAYDAY 2 DLCs.”

While PAYDAY 2 has released a ton of paid content over its years, the notion of essentially renting out DLC for a decade-old game is certainly an odd move by Starbreeze – especially as the game and its DLC have been discounted heavily countless times in the past.

PAYDAY 2 subscription

Players seem to have already started expressing their frustrations with this latest decision, as the game’s ‘Recent’ Steam ratings have now fallen to ‘Mixed’.

Considering the fact that PAYDAY 3 has continued to struggle trying to dig its way out of a hole, adding an unnecessary subscription service to the PREVIOUS entry makes little-to-no sense.
