Baldur’s Gate 3 to join Xbox Play Anywhere program

The recent release of the Rog Xbox Ally has put a renewed focus on Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere service, with the portable PC currently unable to play a majority of owners’ Xbox libraries due to its status as a Windows PC handheld. Fortunately, Microsoft seems to be expanding its Play Anywhere program, with the 2024 GOTY winner Baldur’s Gate 3 said to be joining Xbox Play Anywhere.

Ahead of the upcoming IGN x ID@Xbox showcase later today, Microsoft appears to have accidentally revealed one of the show’s announcements early, with the Xbox Store advertising that Baldur’s Gate 3 will be joining Xbox’s Play Anywhere program (as discovered by ResetEra user ‘Mattmo831’)

For the uninitiated, Xbox Play Anywhere offers players both PC and Xbox versions of games purchased as long as it is available through Microsoft’s Xbox store on Windows.

Though the program has existed for years, the recent release of the ROG Xbox Ally and its lack of true support for Xbox titles has made the Xbox Play Anywhere program that much more vital.

Given that the upcoming IGN showcase is said to include a section dedicated to Play Anywhere, expect more titles to be announced for the program.

All that said, considering the difficulty which Larian Studios encountered when trying to port Baldur’s Gate 3 over to Xbox previously, it is encouraging to see the team continuing to work directly with Xbox / Microsoft.
