Microsoft cancels Avalanche Studios’ Contraband

Earlier this Summer Microsoft shocked everybody when they announced that a ton of their ongoing Xbox projects would be cancelled, with just some of the victims including Perfect Dark and The Initiative; Rare’s Everwild; Zenimax Online’s Project Blackbird and Turn10 – to name a few. One project which was said to be safe from all this was Avalanche Studios’ Contraband. Unfortunately, it seems as though it too has now been cancelled.

Xbox abandons $80 price tag for the rest of its Holiday line-up

Following the surprise announcement last month that Microsoft’s upcoming holiday titles would retail for $80 (starting with The Outer Worlds 2), the console maker backtracked on this decision, instead charging the more ‘standard’ $70. It seems as though Obsidian’s upcoming RPG isn’t the only game being lowered to $70 – with all of Microsoft’s upcoming Holiday titles dropping back down to the previous industry standard.

In the past 5 years or so, Microsoft has swallowed up quite a significant chunk of the video games industry, with the two biggest examples being Zenimax Media in 2020 and of course Activision Blizzard. Given how many fingers it has across the metaphorical video game pie, it comes as little surprise that 4 of the top 5 best-selling games in May were all published by Microsoft.
