Ever since Marvel Rivals launched late last year, fans have been waiting to see whether the game’s contemporary – Overwatch 2 – could compete with what seemed to be a genre-shifting entrant into the market. In a welcome announcement, the upcoming Season 16 for Overwatch 2 is set to add a surprising amount of new content.

Marvel Rivals was clearly gunning to take on Overwatch and now months on from its December 2024 release, analysts reveal that the game was largely successful at eating into the Overwatch player base.

Fans of Overwatch have been calling Blizzard out for their missteps in the transition to Overwatch 2. Now with Marvel Rivals dominating the hero shooter space, the director behind Overwatch 2 has admitted that the game has not "evolved as much as it should have" over the past couple of years.

When Blizzard made the jump from Overwatch to Overwatch 2, 6v6 gameplay wasn't the only thing it left behind. Overwatch 2 also launched without loot boxes, which were the original game's primary source of revenue. Now two years later, Blizzard is bringing them back.
