The AES-NI hardware encryption engine in the DS1019+ does a very good job of negating the effects of dealing with encrypted data with no real difference between RAIDs 5 and 6. In RAID 6 the performance drops just 8.7MB/s when writing to the disks and 22.3MB/s reading back encrypted data. With the disks in RAID 5 mode, the write performance drops 8.4MB/s, and 22MB/s when reading the data.
