Ozone Argon Ocelote World gaming mouse and mat

Even though a lot of pro-gamers are endorsing gaming peripherals these days, it is rare that you see one named after a particular player. Still, that is exactly what has happened with Ozone's latest hardware, which is named after one of the highest earning eSports gamers in the world: Carlos "Ocelote" Rodriguez. Still, that does not necessarily mean it is a winner - which is why we will be putting both the Argon Ocelote World mouse and mat through their paces. The box for the Ocelote World gaming mouse is very informative, with a feature by feature break down on the back, as well an interesting, slightly indented design on the sides which makes it stand out from the usual mouse packaging. Flipping open the main panel, you get a look at the man who helped Ozone design the mouse and you can even get a feel for it yourself through the plastic if you happen to be buying one of these in person. Along with the mouse, you get the usual startup manual and Ozone sticker, but there is also a little miniCD with drivers on it too. This in itself is rather unusual. Furthermore, there is a little carry case which includes four 4.5g additional weights inside. The Ocelote World mat's packaging is pretty similar to that of the mouse, featuring a break down of the aluminium pad's features, and of course a big image of Mr. Ocelote himself, right there on the back. The Ocelote World mouse is quite an eye-catching piece of kit. While it might feature the typical silicon coated black plastic of many a gaming mouse, it also has some bright orange panels and some clear sections which when powered up, light up bright orange. The build of the mouse is solid, with no creaky parts and no sharp edges and it is of a pretty typical size. This is a truly ambidextrous mouse, with identical left and right hand sides, which means that both right and left-handed gamers can use it easily. They feature a pair of orange plastic forward and back buttons, as well as a nicely sized, orange, textured, thumb/finger grip. Moving forward to the front end, there is the usual pair of left/right-click buttons, made out of the same piece of plastic as the main body. The centre has a pair of highlighted DPI switches and a clickable scroll wheel. The braided cable is located in the middle of the front panel, which is a perforated orange grill. The underside of the Ocelote World gaming mouse is quite interesting. The laser sensor is slightly off centre and Ozone has opted for two polytetrafluoroethylene (unbranded Teflon) mouse feet in large, semi-circular orientations. The twist wheel at the base opens up a space to put the additional weights for those that like a heavier mouse. The braided cable is of a high quality and the USB header is somewhat unique, making it stand out in the back of the PC. It has a gold-plated connector. Counter to most of the mats we review here at KitGuru, this one is actually made of aluminium. It has some basic styling that reminds you of what it is called and features a silver edging around the perimeter, but other than that it is just matt black. The underside s the usual textured rubber, but it is a very thin later, no more than a millimetre or so. Of course, as pretty as aluminium can be, it does love to show up fingerprints. Testing a mouse and mat combination is pretty simple: we spend a week playing games and using them for general office tasks like web browsing and photo editing, all the while taking into consideration their looks, performance, back-end software and comfort levels. The same goes for the Ozone Ocelote World mouse and mat combo. Argon Ocelote World gaming mouse This is a gaming mouse, so its gaming ability is perhaps the most important aspect. It is an interesting tool to play with, most notably because it uses a laser sensor rather than an optical one; the latter of which is far more common in gaming rodents these days. However, while there is often some less-than favourable acceleration with a laser sensor, they do tend to be more powerful when it comes to sensitivity and they can work on any surface - including your desk. We reached out to Ozone to ask it just exactly why it chose a laser instead of a more common optical sensor and they said: "The reason for choosing a laser sensor rather than an optical one is because the laser sensor can detect a much higher resolution than other technologies, currently reaching more than 8000 DPI. This is especially good for gaming. They can also be useful in tasks such as graphic design or others that require extra precision ." Back end software gives you all the usual options in an easy to read and navigate interface This is an interesting claim to make as though there certainly are gaming mice with optical sensors with very high DPI, it is also generally considered in FPS pro-gaming circles that optical sensors set to a low DPI are better. However, I am far from a pro gamer and those that are, do not need me telling them what to buy. For us mere mortals, what is the Ocelote World like to use in game? In short, it is excellent. The mouse is smooth, fast and accurate and the fact that it has such a potentially high sensitivity makes it great for all sorts of people, and there is the ability to adjust it right down to the lowest of the low if that is your preference. That means the mouse is comfortable to use in all sorts of games, from fast paced shooters right through to relaxed puzzlers and conversation epics like Telltale's various series. The switches are nice and light too, though you would never accidentally click them and the whole thing has quite a quality feel to it. It feels more suited to a claw or finger grip style, though you could probably get away with a palm grip too in a pinch. Whichever grip you use though, I found the Argon Ocelote World mouse comfortable throughout, as well as grippy, which meant that even during the tensest of moments when the bullets are flying and perspiration is on the rise, you do not slide off thanks to the rubber thumb and finger grips. Similarly so, the side buttons - of which there are four - never get in the way but are there if you want them. If you have remapped something useful to them you can quite easily rock your thumb to press them, or bring up your ring finger and they are just in the right spot. .. The lighting options on the Ocelote World are limited, but pretty It performed similarly well in general office tasks and I did like being able to lower the DPI as far as I could when using Photoshop, as it can often make it a lot easier when fixing troublesome images. It was also nice to see the ability to add weight to the mouse, but personally I preferred the stock weight to its slightly heavier alternatives. Ocelote World mouse mat As for the Ocelote World aluminium mouse pad, it too was a solid performer. I liked its incredibly smooth surface and although the feel is not as comfortable as one you would get from a cloth pad, it is crisper to move around on and feels like a great counterpart to the Argon mouse. On the flip side, it does have all of the usual problems that a metallic mat does, namely, that it is freezing when you first rest your hand on it. That happens throughout the day, so if you do not have the greatest blood flow to your extremities, this might not be the mat for you. It also is not the biggest mat around, which for those running at a low DPI and needing lots of room for big, sweeping arm movements, means you are going to struggle. This mat maxes out at 32 x 26 centimetres, so it is far from huge. That said, the Ocelote mouse this pairs with is designed with a high sensitivity in mind, so the mat is designed to compliment that style. Considering the Ozone Argon Ocelote World mouse bucks the trend and uses a laser sensor in a pro-gaming focused peripheral rather than the usual optical, I was impressed with its performance. It is accurate and fast, with smooth movements thanks to well placed mouse feet. It also has a great build quality, with well placed side buttons, a solid feel to the whole frame and nice rubber thumb grips on the sides. It does not have the most in-depth back-end software and those that are not a fan of orange (especially LEDs) may want to look elsewhere, but you can at least turn the lighting off if you prefer it that way. Other additional features like the braided cable were a nice addition and for those that like to be able to customise the weight and feel of their gaming rodent, the Ocelote World does give you the option of adding in up to another 18g of weight to its underbelly. It was not something I felt was necessary, but those with beefier forearms than me may prefer it that way. I actually find myself hard pressed to find anything negative to say about the product. The Argon Ocelote World is an excellent gaming mouse, listed at a competitive price that matches its feature set. It uses a laser which may not be to everyone's taste, but for an average ability gamer like myself, it performed just as well as any optical equipped sensor I have used. I was not quite such a big fan of the Ocelote World mouse mat, though not because I do not like the cold feeling every time I rest my forearm on my desk. I like the padding of a cloth mat and that they are always at room temperature. On a performance level, it was perfectly fine. All in all, the new Ozone Ocelote World gaming mouse and mat are two well priced, well made peripherals that will serve any gamer faithfully. If you are a fan of a more comfortable mouse mat however, there are probably better alternatives out there. The Ozone Argon Ocelote World mouse is available for £42 at Lambda-Tek. The Ocelote World mouse mat is not available yet, but goes on sale on the 27th April at various retailers for 30 euros, or around £22.
