Corsair Vengeance M60 FPS Gaming Mouse Review

Corsair have been making a name for themselves in the gaming peripheral market. It all started with the HS1 headset which offered an excellent balance between sound quality and price. More recently, they have been expanding their range and we recently looked at their two latest gaming keyboards, the Vengeance K60 and K90. These were tailored for FPS and MMO gaming respectively. We were very impressed with both models and they both won our most prestigious 'Must Have' award. Today we are going to look at the Corsair Vengeance M60 gaming mouse which is designed specifically for FPS gamers. It boasts an impressive specification including a 5700 DPI laser sensor and a sniper mode which instantly drops the sensitivity down to a low level to facilitate more precise shooting. This gives you an idea of the size, shape and ergonomics of the mouse without having to open the packet. It also removes the need for product images as you can see the mouse from every angle, without opening. Corsair have chosen to use a red and black design for the packaging which differentiates the FPS range of Vengeance gaming peripherals from the MMO range. On the back of the packet we find a reasonably detailed breakdown of the technical specifications alongside a feature list that is repeated in a number of different languages. As we found with the Vengeance M90, the included bundle is very small indeed, consisting only of a quick start guide and a warranty leaflet. The only item we would like to see Corsair including in future is some kind of carrying case for the removable weights that have been integrated into the mouse. It's clear that the Vengeance M60 is quite closely related to the M90 mouse as there are a number of aesthetic similarities. It features a similar brushed aluminium chassis which sits underneath the plastic body. The body of the mouse is made up of three different sections with sculpted ergonomic sections on either side to improve grip and a curved section on top where your hand rests. Build quality is impressive and the materials that Corsair have used in the construction of the mouse feel high quality. The mouse is finished in a rubberised paint which feels great in the hand and improves your grip on the mouse. While the aluminium chassis of the mouse offers a reassuring weight, this can be counter-productive in game sometimes as it restricts agility a little. Corsair have included a weight tuning system with the mouse which consists of three weights which can be removed from the base of the mouse. We found this to make little noticeable difference to the weight of the mouse, though, and it was still too heavy for my tastes. But, for those who like a heavy mouse the M60 is perfect. Rather than include a large array of macro buttons like they did with the MMO-optimised M90, Corsair have only added one button to the left hand side of the mouse. This is the 'sniper mode' button which instantly drops the sensitivity down to a low level to facilitate precise aiming. This is ideally located for easy access and it doesn't restrict access to the browser forward and back buttons either. In our opinion, the mouse-wheel on the Vengeance M60 is far superior to that on the M90. It has a much more precise action and cannot be activated as easily. This will let you select weapons with more accuracy in game. The left and right mouse buttons have a responsive action and require exactly the right amount of pressure to activate. Corsair have chosen to use a braided shielding for the mouse cable which is sure to improve durability. It also features a strap which will help keep the cable tidy when traveling to LAN events. The cable terminates in a single USB connector. Rather than include a software CD with the mouse itself, Corsair direct us to their website to download the included software utility. This may sound like unnecessary hassle but it helps to ensure that you have the latest version of the software installed when you first get the mouse. The main page of the software deals with button assignments. It lets you configure the eight mouse buttons to a number of different functions as well as custom macros. We are also able to turn off the LED lighting on this page. Clicking the 'Manage Performance' tab at the top of the page brings up a whole host of different configuration options for the mouse. We are able to configure three different DPI levels which are adjustable on the fly using the two buttons behind the mouse-wheel in addition to the 'Sniper Mode' DPI level. We are able to set the X and Y DPI levels independently to any level between 100 and 5700 DPI using increments of 100 DPI. There is also a rather interesting feature which tests the surface quality that the mouse is being used on. The third and final tab lets us set up different configuration profiles which can be activated when certain applications or games launch. Throughout our tests, the Corsair Vengeance M60 performed very well and felt similar to the M90 during operation. We didn't notice any lapses in tracking during our tests. The 5700 DPI laser sensor should be enough for those who game at very high sensitivity levels. When testing the mouse in Call of Duty, we found the 'sniper mode' button quite useful as it temporarily drops down the sensitivity for precise shooting. We feel that it might work better as an easy to access toggle switch, though, as it can be a little restricting to hold the button down. Despite being quite a heavy mouse, the Vengeance M60 glides smoothly with little effort. This is thanks to the five PFTE glide pads that are located on the underside of the mouse, which reduce friction. Overall, our impressions of the Corsair Vengeance M60 are positive and it makes an excellent mouse for FPS gamers. It offers a winning combination of solid build quality and attractive aesthetics. We found the mouse wheel on the M60 to be far preferable to that of the M90 as it can be operated with a greater deal of precision. Both the M60 and M90 are heavy mice due to the aluminium chassis that Corsair have chosen to use. So, if you prefer a lightweight mouse, you should probably look elsewhere. An important factor to consider for every gamer is the price. The Corsair Vengeance M60 is currently on the market for a shade under £50 at Aria.co.uk. We feel that this is quite reasonable value considering it is cheaper than alternatives such as the SteelSeries Xai. Pros Premium build quality. Smooth glide. Attractive aesthetics.
