Sennheiser releases add-on mic to transform HD 500 headphones into gaming headsets

Sennheiser has launched a new accessory that will be music to the ears of many gamers. The new HD 500 BAM is a detachable boom arm microphone designed to plug directly into the brand's popular HD 500 series headphones, converting them into a high-quality, single-cable gaming headset.

The new microphone add-on is designed to work with any Sennheiser headphone that uses its proprietary single-sided twist-lock connector. This means it's compatible with a vast range of new and legacy models, from the modern HD 560S and HD 620S all the way back to older classics in the 5-8 and 5-9 series. It's a simple plug-and-play upgrade for a massive existing user base that has been forced to use a dedicated microphone.

At the core of the HD 500 BAM is a 10 mm electret condenser microphone with a cardioid pickup pattern. Sennheiser says this design is focused on providing voice clarity for in-game comms and calls, while the cardioid pattern helps to reject unwanted background noise from your keyboard or other people in the room.

The microphone's 1.5-meter cable features a convenient in-line volume control and a mute switch. To ensure maximum compatibility right out of the box, Sennheiser has also included three windscreens and a Y-adapter to split the single 4-pole 3.5mm jack into separate microphone and headphone connections for your PC's sound card. It's available to purchase now with a suggested retail price of $59.95/€49.90.
