Edifier Luna Eclipse e25 2.0 Speakers Review

Today we are going to take a look at the latest set of speakers from Edifier, dubbed the Luna Eclipse e25. Previous Edifier reviews have highlighted high build standards and excellent sound quality so we are interested to see how the Eclipse e25 compares. Edifier has designed the Luna Eclipse e25 for design-conscious users looking for a high quality pair of stereo speakers. While Edifier say that they are the perfect companions for a desktop PC, we could argue that they are even better for a user with a laptop, thanks to their wireless connectivity. The speakers are available in both gloss-red and gloss black finishes. Our sample is finished in gloss-black which we imagine will be the most popular flavour. Features: Bluetooth pairing capability with Bluetooth enabled devices. Auxiliary input port for versatile connectivity to external devices. Capacitive touch sensitive controls for volume, play/pause, previous/next track and standby. Incorporation of DSP and DRC for enhanced audio performance and distortion control. Electronic crossover and dedicated power amplifier to each tweeter and bass drivers. 3 inch bass driver and 9mm silk dome tweeter in each speaker. Dual 3inch passive bass radiators for enhanced bass effect in each speaker. Remote control for volume and power. The Luna Eclipse is supplied in a substantial, high quality box. The exterior is decorated in a black and white livery which looks very exclusive indeed. The front features a large image of the speaker set. Turning the box around reveals a wealth of information about the features and specification of the speaker set alongside some further images of the product. We are sure that the box will provide a great level of protection for the speakers within. Inside the box, we find a number of accessories. These include both UK and EU power cords, a 3.5mm audio cable and a remote control. The Luna Eclipse is comprised of two separate speaker units which are very similar in design. The right speaker also acts as the amplifier and Bluetooth receiver and connects to the left speaker with a cable. It’s clear that Edifier has designed the Luna Eclipse to appeal to those customers who are looking for an understated but attractive set of speakers. Their piano black finish looks very exclusive, although it does pick up scratches readily. The two speakers are ovoid in shape, with a flat area on the bottom to allow them to stand up. These flat areas are fairly small, though, meaning it is quite easy to knock the speakers over accidentally. Edifier has chosen to use touch volume controls on the left side of the right speaker, alongside the power button. Swiping across these buttons will also let you change track when you’re using the speakers in Bluetooth mode. Moving around to the rear of the speakers, we find the I/O connections. On the right speaker, we find a 3.5mm socket, DC-in jack, and a connector which lets you plug in the other speaker. Each of the speaker units feature two active drivers, one 22W and one 15W. These measure 3.5 inches and 19 mm respectively. There is also a 3 inch passive driver in the rear of each unit. Firstly, we connected the Luna Eclipse up to a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop via Bluetooth. This was very simple and only took a few seconds to complete. We commenced testing with Chopin’s Nocturne in Eb Major (Op.9 No. 2) which is a rather delicate piano piece. We were very impressed with performance in this test, with the speakers exhibiting a balanced sound and incredible clarity in the higher frequencies. Moving on to more mainstream music from the likes of Adele, we were impressed with the warmth of the mid-tones and the generally well-balanced soundstage. Unfortunately, the lack of a dedicated subwoofer lets the Luna Eclipse down in more bass-heavy genres. They aren’t particularly well suited to the likes of drum and bass and dubstep, so we would recommend looking at other models if you plan to use the speakers for this kind of music. Moving on to our movie playback test, we played the opening sequence Dark Knight on Blu-Ray. The compact size of the Luna Eclipse and the lack of prominence in the lower registers meant that they struggled to create an immersive experience, even in our relatively small living room test environment. The sound-panning was good for a set of stereo speakers, but not particularly impressive on the whole. We also conducted a gaming test with the speakers in Battlefield 4. While they rendered gunshots and explosions accurately, the sound balance isn’t particularly well-suited to this kind of use. They are perfectly satisfactory for some casual gaming, though. We were quite impressed by the maximum volume level offered by the speakers, especially considering their size. We doubt that there will be many users out there who think that the Luna Eclipse needs to be any louder! Overall we are pretty impressed with what the Luna Eclipse e25 has to offer. It’s clear that Edifier are targeting these speakers at design conscious users who will appreciate the elegant shape and piano-black finish of the speaker units. They should look great in almost any environment, the red version in particular is very eye catching. The build quality of the speakers is as good as can be expected and we imagine that they will last a good few years. The only slight downside in terms of design is the relatively small footprint of each speaker which makes them prone to being knocked over. Considering the 2.0 configuration of this speaker set, we were very impressed with the sound quality. The lack of a dedicated subwoofer was certainly noticeable however and is the only major drawback of the Luna Eclipse. However, for those who are looking for an elegant set of speakers to accompany a multimedia PC or laptop, the Luna Eclipse is perfectly suited. The inclusion of Bluetooth connectivity makes the Luna Eclipse ideal for those who want a set of speakers to use with a laptop as it means that they don’t have to be plugged in every time you want to use them. At a price of around £130 from Hughes Direct, we feel that these speakers offer reasonable value for money.
