All the way back in 2015, Sony launched its PlayStation Gear store, letting fans of the console maker obtain a bunch of official merchandise straight from Sony themselves. Since then, the digital shop expanded to additional regions including the UK. Unfortunately, as with some of its other services, Sony has now announced that they will be shutting down PlayStation Gear later this year.
In going to the official PlayStation Gear site, a message can be seen at the top of the page announcing the store’s impending closure – writing:
“Thanks for visiting PlayStation Gear Store. This site will be closing December 31st. Our Customer Service team will still be here and happy to help regarding your order. All sales are final.”
No reason was given for this decision, however, considering the fact that PlayStation themselves have partnered with (and continue to partner with) other merchandise sites such as Insert Coin, perhaps they are simply moving away from handling their own shipping, logistics and warehouse costs – leaving it all instead up to their other merch partners.
Though neither announced nor confirmed, the closure of PlayStation Gear could also be as a result of Sony wanting to consolidate their online stores, with the hardware-focused PlayStation Direct becoming the new home for merch.
We will have to wait and see, but with Sony having shut down the likes of PlayStations Stars, and now PlayStation Gear, it appears as though the console maker is winding down some of its lesser-successful services.
