Ubisoft was betting big on Assassin’s Creed Shadows, with the latest entry in the RPG-styled AC titles launching back in March following delays and some content retooling. While the open world title started off strong, sales have plateaued a bit since, with the game currently sitting at 5 million total players.
Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Assassin’s Creed page shared this latest milestone, writing:
“5 MILLION ASSASSINS
- 2B stealth kills
- 1B km traveled
- 38M animals petted
…and still, you paused to take in the view. Thank you for forging legends with us. Naoe & Yasuke’s journey continues—updates coming this week!”
As always, it is worth noting that 5 million players does not equate to 5 million copies sold, especially as Shadows has been available on Ubisoft’s subscription service since launch.
That said, 5 million players is still a milestone achievement, even if it took them some time to get there. For context, AC: Shadows was confirmed to have surpassed 1 million total players on its first day. This number then grew to 2 million after roughly 72 hours. Finally, the most recent update prior to this latest announcement was confirmation that the game had surpassed 3 million players within a week on sale.
Given that it has since taken a further 4 months to reach 5 million players, excitement toward Assassin’s Creed Shadows has certainly waned.
Of course, Ubisoft has promised to offer plenty of free and paid additions in the future – including parkour enhancements, a co-op mode and extra features. Whether these updates will entice more players to give Shadows a go, we will have to continue to wait and see. With Ghost of Yotei only a couple months away however, who knows.
