Epomaker’s new RT85 is a retro keyboard with a screen and a joystick

Following the success of the RT100, Epomaker has launched the latest addition to its retro-themed lineup, the Epomaker RT85. This new keyboard continues the theme of blending vintage consumer electronics design with modern features, including a screen, a joystick, and a five-layer sound-dampening system, all for a relatively low launch price.

The RT85 is packed with hardware controls that set it apart. Above the function row sits a customisable TFT screen that can be used as a clock or to display user-uploaded animations and GIFs. Next to the arrow keys is a four-way joystick for controlling volume and RGB lighting. Even the connection mode selector is a tactile rotary dial, inspired by the feel of an old TV tuner.

Inside, the RT85 is built like an expensive enthusiast board. It features a gasket-mounted, flex-cut polycarbonate plate and a full five-layer stack of sound-dampening foams and pads, including Poron and silicone ones. This acoustic treatment, paired with factory-lubed switches (Epomaker Wisteria V2 linear or Creamy Jade linear) and stabilisers, is designed to deliver a deep, resonant, and “thocky” typing sound right out of the box.

The keyboard offers versatile tri-mode connectivity (USB-C, 2.4 GHz, and Bluetooth) and is powered by an 8,000 mAh battery. The most impressive feature, however, might be the price, with the Epomaker RT85 now available for $85.99 in white/grey and green/white.
