The Katamari series is a highly unique puzzle collectathon of sorts, thanks to its gravity-based rolling mechanics alongside a suite of stylised music and visuals. In celebration of the franchise’s 20th anniversary, the team at Bandai Namco promised that new entries were in the works. Sure enough, Once Upon A Katamari has now been officially announced – marking the first new console entry in over a decade.
Announced during the recent Nintendo Partner Direct, Once Upon A Katamari is the first console entry since 2011’s Touch My Katamari for the PS Vita. That said, in the years since Bandai Namco has brought the series back into the limelight with a series of remasters/remakes.
Finally however, we are getting a proper new Katamari game on the 24th of October, with some its innovations including:
- never-before-seen support tools
- A campaign which takes you across the Earth’s different eras of history (such as the “Jurassic Era, Ice Age, and more”)
- 69 different playable characters
- Additional character customisation
- New 4-player KatamariBall PvP mode
As mentioned, there really isn’t anything quite like Katamari, and so it is exciting to finally see a new entry come along after years of mobile spin-offs and re-releases.
Once Upon A Katamari launches on the 24th of October on all current-gen platforms (and Switch) for the relatively modest price of £34.99.
