GTA V has now sold over 215 million copies

For more than a decade now, Grand Theft Auto V has continued to sell like hotcakes, with the now-two-generation-old title consistently pushing around 5 million copies every single quarter. As part of publisher Take-Two’s latest fiscal earnings report, it's been revealed that GTA V has now surpassed 215 million copies – bringing total franchise sales to 455 million.

As part of the company’s latest investor presentation, Take Two offered updated sales stats for many of its major franchises. Alongside confirmation that the Red Dead series has now exceeded 104 million units sold (77 million of which is attributed to RDR2), the publisher revealed that GTA V has once again sold a further 5 million copies – pushing total units past 215 million.

Alongside this, Take-Two also offered a slight tease for the much-anticipated GTA VI, revealing that May’s ‘Trailer 2’ achieved the “biggest [cross platform] video launch of all time, with over 475 million views in 24 hours.”

Despite all this, GTA V is still not the best-selling game of all time, with that honour going to the ever-green survival crafter Minecraft (which currently sits at 350 million copies sold). Of course, Minecraft has been available on pretty much every platform possible, from mobile phones; to the Switch; 3DS and more – and so the comparison isn’t quite apples-to-apples.

Still, there is no denying that GTA V continues to be an absolute juggernaut; and given just how much it has sold, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see its sequel enter the top 10 best-sellers list almost immediately. We will have to wait and see.
