A new big budget Lord of the Rings game is reportedly in development

While the Lord of the Rings universe is rich with stories; lore; characters and more (all of which are perfect to be adapted into video game form), the franchise has struggled to release a quality game in quite some time – with its most recent high being the 2014 open-world ‘Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor’. That said, following the likes of LOTR Gollum and the middling Return to Moria, a big-budget ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ styled 3rd-person Lord of the Rings game is reportedly in the works.

As reported by the publication Insider-Gaming, a new Lord of the Rings game is said to be in development “and has been for some time.”

Very few details have been shared so far, with the only ‘facts’ gameplay-wise being that it is reportedly ‘a third-person action game that is designed, in a way, to “compete with Hogwarts Legacy”’ – indicating that it will likely be a story-focused single player open-world game of sorts.

Beyond this, the only other ‘confirmed’ details is that the title is being funded in-part by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office to the tune of $100 million.

Of course, all this should be taken with a pinch of salt for now. That said, according to Insider-Gaming, the deal will “be made official ‘soon’ and could happen as early as next week,” meaning we shouldn’t have to wait long to find out.

Assuming an announcement is impending, expect it to initially offer little more than ancillary details. Still, it will be interesting to see what a proper Lord of the Rings game could look like 10 years on from its previous peak.
