Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth “doing very well” following PC launch

At the Tokyo Game Show last week, many Japanese developers spoke up in interviews. One such developer was Naoki Hamaguchi, the director behind Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Hamaguchi shared an update on the upcoming third game in the Final Fantasy 7 trilogy, but beyond that, he also provided an update on Rebirth sales after last year's ‘disappointing' PS5 launch.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth first launched as a PlayStation 5 exclusive in early 2024. While the game launched to rave reviews from fans and critics alike, Square Enix admitted that sales did not meet expectations. This isn't exactly an uncommon occurrence for Square Enix, which has often set lofty revenue targets for its AAA studios. However, it became an especially big talking point this time due to the game's PS5 exclusivity, which had also hurt Final Fantasy 16's launch in 2023.

Following this, Square Enix promised to focus more on multiplatform game development for future games. Both Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth eventually launched on PC, one year after their respective PS5 release dates. At this point, Final Fantasy 16 is also available on Xbox, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake recently launched for Nintendo Switch 2 consoles.

Now that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has had around 8 months of availability on PC, opening the game up to millions of new players, sales have improved. Speaking with Automaton in a recent interview, director Naoki Hamaguchi said: “The second entry, FFVII Rebirth, has been doing very well on both PS5 and PC. I know some fans have expressed concerns, but please rest assured, we’ll be able to deliver a proper, high-quality third installment.”

The third part of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy will wrap up the story. Some voice lines have already been recorded, and in the same interview linked above, Hamaguchi confirmed that a lot of the game's content is already playable. A release date and title reveal for the game are expected next year.
