FEAR fans should grab the Echo Patch for massive improvements

Warner Bros shut down the studio responsible for the FEAR series earlier this year but shortly after, GOG picked up the games as part of its Game Preservation Program, ensuring they remain accessible for years to come. Now, modders are also getting in on the action, with a new mod that makes sweeping upgrades to UI, amongst other upgrades like controller support.

FEAR is a classic shooter with a dash of supernatural horror thrown in. A new mod now makes the original game more modern than ever, with major additions like a scalable UI – important for those with high resolution displays, as well as proper controller support.

The Echo Patch, developed by Trepang2 and publicised by PCGamer, fixes the game up a number of game bugs too, enabling proper gameplay at high frame rates, without the added physics or animation instability. Thanks to the added controller support, this version of the game is also completely playable on Steam Deck.

The mod is freely available via Github. All you have to do is extract the files into the same folder as fear.exe. After that, you can make further adjustments by accessing the .ini file included in the mod.

KitGuru Says: FEAR is one of my personal favourites. If this mod works as well as advertised, then this could be the new ‘definitive' way to play the game, going even further beyond the improvements introduced by GOG.
