PlayStation is making refunds easier to request but not to obtain

Sony has rolled out a welcome quality-of-life update for the PlayStation Store, making the process of requesting a refund much simpler. Users can now initiate a refund directly from their transaction history, bypassing the need to interact with customer support agents or chatbots.

The underlying refund policy remains unchanged, but at least the new self-service option makes the user's life a bit easier. According to PlayStation's support site, instead of navigating support pages, you can now go to your account's transaction history, find the purchase, and submit a refund request with a few clicks, streamlining what was previously a more cumbersome process.

Unfortunately, this process still runs into the brick wall of Sony's rigid refund rules. Users can request a refund within 14 days of purchase, but only if they have not started to download or stream the content. This means if you accidentally buy the wrong version of a game and your console begins the download automatically, you are technically not eligible for a refund under the current rules, unless the content is proven to be faulty.

While Sony has made rare exceptions in the past for specific cases, this new self-service option doesn't change the day-to-day reality for most users. Making the process less painful is a good step, but it doesn't address the core issue that the PlayStation Store's refund policy remains one of the most restrictive among major digital platforms.
