7 inch iPad to have Cortex A9 CPU – industry insider info

KitGuru recently reported on the rumours of a new 7 inch iPad – what our sources in the far east have told us today however is that the new handheld may very well sport the faster Cortex A9 processor meaning it would be ideal to take on the gaming market.

It looks as if Apple are going to enhance the speed of the iPad by changing the A4 processor over to the Cortex A9 and doubling the memory count from 256MB to 512MB.

Why Cortex A9? it would double the clock speed from 1GHZ to 2GHZ meaning that more complex games could run at smoother frame rates.

The latest information also seems to point to the fact that the 7 inch version will deliver the same 1024×768 resolution as found on the current iPad.

What is most striking however is the fact that Apple may very well be releasing this around March 2011.

KitGuru says: This could well be a big issue for Nintendo, depending on the pricing.

  1. Will be very interesting to see how this develops – a 2GHZ CPU in a machine like this would be wicked, but I wonder how battery life would be affected.

  2. I have to be honest, this product sounds a lot sexier than the current ipad. if they throw in a USB 2.0 port, ill be happier.
