Pokémon Legends: Z-A has already sold over 5.8 million copies

The sentiment surrounding Pokémon Legends: Z-A has been far from flawless, with many long-time fans of the franchise becoming increasingly frustrated with Game Freak consistently falling behind the rest of the industry quality-wise. Even so, each new entry continues to sell like hotcakes, with Legends: Z-A officially confirmed to have sold 5.8 million copies in its first week.

Making the announcement via a press release (translated by ResetEra user ‘jojoroy’), The Pokémon Company offered some early launch sales figures for their latest release, writing:

“Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A, released simultaneously worldwide on Thursday, October 16, 2025, for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, has sold 5.8 million copies globally in its first week,” adding that “approximately half of these sales were on Nintendo Switch 2.”

Putting this number into context, a recent data breach revealed that Legends: Z-A had a budget of just $13 million. Assuming this includes marketing costs, then Game Freak’s latest and greatest would have needed to sell just under 200,000 copies to make a profit. Of course, they have sold more than 25x this figure in the first week alone.

Despite fan sentiment surrounding the game being quite negative, it appears as though the Pokémon franchise is indeed too big to fail.
