Starfield’s official mod tools will arrive in 2024

Modders have gotten to a swift start with Starfield, with hundreds of mods already available on Nexus accruing millions of downloads. For now, mod makers are a little limited by older Creation Engine tools. However, that is set to change in 2024, Todd Howard confirms.

Starfield director, Todd Howard, touched on plans for modding tools in a recent interview with Japanese site, Famitsu. In the interview he confirmed that the official mod tool kit for Starfield will become available “next year”, which lines up with Bethesda's usual timelines for releasing its creation tools.

Previously, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim received its official mod kit release around four months after launch. For Fallout 4, that timeline extended slightly to around half a year. With that in mind, we would anticipate Starfield's mod tools to release sometime in Q1 2024.

In the meantime, modders have been swiftly working on ways to improve Starfield. A script extender is already available, which will enable modders to do more with the game. Additionally, users have been quickly working on ways to get the game running better on a range of PCs, adding support for additional upscaling technologies like DLSS and quality-of-life changes, like new UI elements and menu screens.
