Resident Evil Requiem director explains decision to add 3rd-person camera

Resident Evil Requiem is due out in February and Capcom is slowly revealing more details about the game and its development. While the previous two titles, Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village, have been first-person games, Requiem will add a third-person camera. The game director has now explained that this is to make the experience less intense after finding Resident Evil 7 to be too scary.

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Requiem director, Koshi Nakanishi, said that in his view, Resident Evil 7 was “possibly too scary”, here is the full quote:

“Looking back at Resident Evil 7's first person perspective, I implemented that as a way to make it more immersive and scarier than ever before, which I think most you know media and players agreed it was an incredibly scary game, but it was possibly too scary. I think some people couldn't handle it and either couldn't finish or didn't even start it. And that's something that I look back on thinking that, you know, I want to make sure that people can enjoy this game.”

As a result of that reflection, Resident Evil Requiem will include an option to switch to a third-person camera. This is more in line with the classic Resident Evil games, which have brought in many new fans in recent years thanks to the popular remakes. With that said, the default setting is still first-person in Resident Evil Requiem, so you will have to make the conscious effort to change it.

Resident Evil Requiem will release for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on the 27th of February 2026.
