Metroid Dread finally announced, coming this year

A lot of fans were tuning into Nintendo's E3 stream last night hoping to see something new for the Metroid IP. While we didn't end up getting our first look at Metroid Prime 4, Nintendo does have another Metroid game in the works and better yet, it will be releasing this year. 

During Nintendo's E3 2021 Direct stream, the company announced Metroid Dread, otherwise known as Metroid 5. This will be a new 2D side-scroller Metroid game, developed by MercurySteam, the same studio behind 2017's Metroid: Samus Returns for the Nintendo 3DS.

Metroid Dread takes place after the events of Metroid Fusion, which released all the way back in 2002. The game initially went into development back in 2005 for the Nintendo DS but was dropped due to technical limitations.

In Metroid Dread, players will take on the role of Samus Aran once again, exploring a new alien planet and facing a new robotic enemy. Story-wise, this game will end the long-running main story-arc of the Metroid series.

Metroid Dread is releasing for the Nintendo Switch on the 8th of October 2021.
