Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 will have a multiplatform launch

Square Enix is hard at work on the next installment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy. Director, Naoki Hamaguchi has been on a mini press tour in recent weeks, revealing some crucial new details about the game, including confirmation that it is being developed as a multi-platform release.

In a newly published interview from Easy Allies, Hamaguchi explains that Square Enix does have “designated teams working on each platform”, which wasn't the case with Final Fantasy 7 Remake or Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which were both developed as PlayStation exclusives and then later ported to other platforms.

Due to lower-than-expected launch sales for Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16, both of which were only available on PS5 at launch, Square Enix began to restructure its development process to better support all platforms, including the Switch 2, PC and Xbox, alongside PlayStation.

Interestingly on the Xbox front, Hamaguchi does echo a sentiment that several other developers have expressed in the past – the Xbox Series consoles do not have enough memory: “As for the Xbox version, like many other publishers, I think we did see some issues with the lack of memory compared with other platforms”. It is unclear if he is referring to both the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S here, but a few developers have discussed the struggles of optimising for the lower memory capacity on the Series S console at this point. Microsoft even had to break its own parity rules in order to get Baldur's Gate 3 on the platform, although Larian did eventually figure out local co-op, even on the weaker console.
