Ubisoft has been making some major changes behind the scenes, splintering the company into new subsidiaries that handle different IP. Now, a few classic Ubisoft titles are changing hands to an unexpected buyer – Atari.
Atari has made a surprise acquisition. The company has secured the IP rights to five Ubisoft games and plans to re-release them under the Atari umbrella and expand them with new content. There are no ‘big name' games here, but you may recognise a few of them:
- Cold Fear (2005)
- Child of Eden (2011)
- I Am Alive (2012)
- Grow Home (2015)
- Grow Up (2016)
Atari CEO, Wade Rosen, said that the company is “excited to reintroduce these titles while also exploring ways to expand and evolve these franchises”. The world franchise might be a tad strong here, as most of the games here were one-and-done releases.
Cold Fear is a mid-2000s horror game that sets players off on a mission to defend the US coast from incoming Zombie-infested ships. I Am Alive has similar vibes, taking place in a post-apocalyptic world, but following the story of a father searching for his missing family. Child of Eden is the game that stands out the most, as it is a Rythm game developed by Tetsuya Mizuguchi, who also went on to create the likes of Rez and Tetris Effect.
The final two games on the list, Grow Home and its sequel, Grow Up, are family-friendly games that feature a small robot character who goes around their home planet replanting beanstalks to keep the environment healthy.
There are no further details yet, but we expect to hear more about Atari's plans for these new games in the coming months.
