1.5 million ESEA accounts compromised after hack

If you are a serious Counter-Strike player, whether it be 1.6 or Global Offensive, then chances are you've come across the ESEA (Esports Entertainment Association) at some point. If you happened to be a member of the premium matchmaking service, then you may want to keep an eye out as over 1.5 million user accounts have been compromised in a database breach.

The actual attack took place on the ESEA website on the 27th of December and the database was leaked a short while later after the ESEA refused to pay the hacker a $100,000 ransom. In total, LeakedSource has confirmation that 1,503,707 ESEA records have leaked onto the web, so you can go there to double check if you have been compromised.

In an FAQ on the ESEA website, the company explains that an investigation is still ongoing but a large portion of users will have had their usernames, email address, private messages, IP addresses, phone numbers, forum posts, hashed passwords and hashed secret question answers exposed.

The actual flaw that allowed this breach to take place has since been patched up but all ESEA members are urged to change their passwords/secret question answers. You should also be on the look out for any suspicious emails so that you don't fall into a phishing scam.
