Square Enix unveils new HD-2D action RPG for Switch 2

During the last Nintendo Direct presentation, Square Enix delivered a surprise new IP from a fan-favourite studio. Team Asano, the acclaimed developers behind the Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default series, have revealed The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, a brand-new action RPG built in their signature HD-2D art style.

The game follows the journey of Elliot and his fairy companion, Faie, as they explore the continent of Philabeldia. While their home, the Kingdom of Huther, remains safe under a protective spell, the wider continent has been invaded by animal tribes. The duo's adventure begins when they set out to investigate a mysterious set of ruins just outside the castle walls.

Unlike Team Asano's previous turn-based titles, The Millennium Tales is an action RPG. Players will wield seven different weapon types, from swords and sickles to arrows and chains. Combat can be customised through a “Magicite” system, which allows players to equip various abilities and buffs. As for Faie, she isn't just a sidekick. The character is fully playable. In single-player, you can switch between controlling Elliot and Faie at any time, with the fairy companion able to fight and gather items independently. The entire game also supports two-player co-op, with each player taking control of one of the heroes.

Square Enix has already released a demo for the game on the Switch 2 eShop to gather feedback, so you can try it out if you're interested. The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is scheduled for a full release in 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Switch 2.
