AMD’s next-gen Fluid Motion Frames 3 spotted in latest driver update

It looks like AMD is hard at work on the next iteration of its driver-level frame generation technology. Evidence of AMD Fluid Motion Frames 3 (AFMF3) has been discovered in a recent Radeon driver package, suggesting that an update to the popular feature is already well into development.

Mentions of this new version of the frame generation software have been found by Guru3D forum user ecffg2010 (via @harukaze5719) on the 25.20 branch driver.

AFMF is AMD's driver-level frame generation solution that works in almost any game. It works by interpolating frames to increase the perceived frame rate, though this comes at the cost of some added input latency. While the first version was a good start, AFMF 2 brought significant improvements to performance and latency. It's expected that AFMF3 will continue this trend, likely incorporating enhancements to improve image quality and better compete with Nvidia's Smooth Motion, the green team's driver-level frame generation technology.

While not a replacement for natively supported frame generation, which has access to more data, AFMF has become a popular tool for breathing new life into older titles and emulators that won't receive official support for FSR frame generation. The biggest question surrounding this new version, however, is hardware compatibility. With the upcoming FSR Redstone suite and its FSR 4 upscaler rumoured to be exclusive to RDNA 4 GPUs, many are now wondering if AFMF3 will follow suit and be locked to the new architecture.
