Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5-8400 CUDIMM Review

Rating: 7.0.

Today we are reviewing a kit of Corsair Vengeance RGB 48GB DDR5-8400 CUDIMM memory, and there is no denying that is quite a mouthful. The magic part of the name is the enormous clock speed of 8400MT/sec and the explanation is that these are CUDIMMs or Clocked Unbuffered Dual Inline Memory Modules, which is another way of saying really fast DDR5 for Intel Core Ultra 200S.

Specification:

  • Memory Size: 48GB (2 x 24GB)
  • Tested Latency: 40-52-52-135
  • Tested Speed: 8200 MT/s
  • Tested Voltage: 1.40V
  • SPD Voltage: 1.1V
  • Speed Rating: PC5-65600 (DDR5-8200)
  • SPD Speed: 5600MHz
  • SPD Latency: 48-48-48-90
  • Performance Profile: XMP 3.0
  • Package Memory Format: CUDIMM

Testing and Performance

In our video we explain that CUDIMMs memory is specifically intended for use in Intel Core Ultra 200S PCs with a motherboard that has an Intel 800-series chipset. In our testing we compared five sets of memory:

  • Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR5-8400 48GB 40-52-52-135 1.40V
  • Kingston Fury Renegade DDR5-8200 48GB 40-50-50-128 1.45V
  • G.Skill Trident Z5 CK DDR5-8200 48GB 40-52-52-131 1.40V
  • G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB DDR5-6800 32GB 34-45-45-108 1.40V
  • G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB DDR5-6000 32GB 30-40-40-96 1.35V

Test System:

  • Processor: Intel Core Ultra 9 285K
  • CPU Cooler: Phanteks Glacier One 360D30
  • Motherboard: MSI MPG Z890 Carbon WiFi
  • Graphics card: Palit RTX 5080 GameRock OC 16GB
  • Power supply: Seasonic Focus GX-1000
  • SSD: 1TB Crucial T705 M.2 NVMe
  • OS: Windows 11

AIDA64 Memory Bandwidth

AIDA64 Memory Bandwidth is a synthetic benchmark test that perfectly aligns with the rated speed of each set of memory, with Corsair coming out on top.

AIDA64 Memory Copy

It is a similar story with the AIDA64 Memory Copy test, although this time the Corsair kit comes home in second place.

7-Zip

We see the benefits of fast memory in the 7-Zip compressing test where the Corsair kit has a distinct advantage over conventional DDR5-6000 memory.

Closing Thoughts

CUDIMMs are an interesting new technology that has been described as DDR5.5, where the inclusion of the CKD chip allows amazingly high speeds.

This kit of Corsair Vengeance RGB runs at 8200MT/sec which is – surprisingly – relatively slow as the range of speeds offered by Corsair for CUDIMMs runs from 8000MT/sec to 9200MT/sec. The downside is that this technology only applies to owners of Intel Core Ultra 200S as AMD does not support this technology.

The two other issues faced by Corsair are the high price of CUDIMMs compared to conventional DDR5 along with the difficulty of finding a benefit from the extra clock speed. On the plus side we were very impressed by the build quality of this Corsair Vengeance RGB kit and consider the lighting to be the very best that money can buy.

You can buy the Corsair Vengeance RGB 48GB DDR5-8400 CUDIMM kit for £390 HERE.

Pros:

  • Excellent looks with top quality RGB lighting.
  • Performance was good on our Core Ultra 9 test system.
  • Zero problems with good stability.

Cons:

  • The price is crazy high. Corsair has similar kits that are slightly more expensive than the competition.
  • You need to use Corsair iCUE to get the most from this memory.
  • CUDIMMs are only compatible with Intel 800-series motherboards.

KitGuru says: Corsair prices are crazy. We suggest you buy the DDR5-8200 option instead of this 8400 kit.
