Samsung Electronics set to fight Nvidia in court

Samsung Electronics has announced that it would fight Nvidia Corp. in court and will not give up. The consumer electronics giant did not outline any special plans, but it looks like the company is ready for a long legal battle against Nvidia.

Samsung said it would take “all measures necessary” against Nvidia, who accused Samsung and Qualcomm in infringements of its patents, reports Reuters news-agency. Samsung develops its own mobile application processors using intellectual property from ARM and Imagination Technologies. Nvidia believes that by doing so Samsung infringes a number of Nvidia's patents. Nvidia also claims that Qualcomm illegally uses its intellectual property.

The lawsuit that Nvidia filed against Samsung and Qualcomm is the first legal action of this kind in Nvidia’s history. Moreover, this may be the first round of computer graphics-related patent war since Nvidia holds a lot of patents.

Samsung did not specify what actions it plans to take against Nvidia, but given that it also has a vast patent portfolio it may try to counter-sue Nvidia.

KitGuru Says: It will be really interesting to see how Samsung plans to fight Nvidia. The two companies are very different and it is much easier for Nvidia to accuse Samsung of wrongdoings since Samsung does not develop graphics processing technologies, but uses IP from third parties.
