AMD AGESA update brings “Turbo” mode to Ryzen 9000 series CPUs

We are supposedly a few days away from the debut of the new Ryzen 9000X3D series, but motherboard suppliers are already working on launching new features for the upcoming CPUs. A fresh BIOS update with the revised AGESA 1.2.0.2a microcode was launched, introducing a new “Turbo” mode for Ryzen 9000 series CPUs.

The new AGESA version looks to be geared towards the X3D series, but standard Ryzen 9000 series CPUs should also benefit from its new features. Starting with the new “Turbo” mode, Gigabyte startled everyone by making lofty performance claims for it. However, this is not a Gigabyte-exclusive function; it is currently included in the new BIOS updates for some ASRock, MSI, and Asus X870(E) motherboards, too.

This mode purportedly disables SMT (AMD's hyper-threading) and introduces latency and CCD optimisations (not detailed yet). For dual-CCD X3D CPUs, Turbo Mode may also limit operation to a single CCD. PPT looks to remain unchanged.

However, it seems that this feature won't benefit the X3D series alone. X user York (via Wccftech) already tested the new “Turbo” mode and claimed that its 9700X has seen some performance improvements. According to the data shared, memory bandwidth increased by over 10%. As for gaming, in Forza Horizon 5, the average FPS increased by 4.8%, and the minimum FPS by over 15%.

Although promising, these new BIOS are still in beta, so some problems may arise when running your system using the latest BIOS version. Update at your discretion.
