Previously unseen Knights of the Old Republic Remake assets discovered

Despite being announced five years ago, we've had no official updates for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake. Originally in development at Aspyr, the game ended up shifting to Saber Interactive, but progress has been painfully slow from the outside looking in. Recently, a previously unseen piece of concept art for the game leaked online, now, a number of other screenshots reveal various assets from Aspyr's cancelled version of the game.

An artist who worked on the KOTOR Remake project uploaded several screenshots of assets they had created for the Remake. This selection, found by MP1st, also includes a screenshot of a developer testing ground, with the placeholder character wielding a Vibroblade, a weapon that fans of the KOTOR games will already be very familiar with.

It isn't a lot, but the re-designed weapons and set-dressing assets such as server racks and miscellaneous materials, do look like a massive improvement, while remaining true to the original designs. This makes it clear that Aspyr went into this remake looking to keep as much of the original game design as possible. Rumours claimed that Sony and Disney executives had been hoping for more of a complete reinvention of the KOTOR IP, which is why the project ultimately moved to Saber Interactive.

Saber Interactive said in 2024 that the KOTOR remake was still ‘alive and well' but there have been no further announcements since.

KitGuru Says: I can't help but feel like a mistake was made moving this game from Aspyr. That studio has been working on all of the classic Star Wars games for years and with KOTOR being one of the most beloved RPGs of all time, the new developers will have to be very careful with any changes made. Too much change to design could immediately turn fans of the original off.
